How to Retest for a GED

Each year thousands of test takers complete a battery of tests in language arts, math, science and social studies in hopes of receiving a high school equivalency diploma (GED). Sometimes individuals may fail certain portions of the exam and need to retake the test. Each testing center has specific guidelines and deadlines regarding retesting for the GED, such as completing a retest application. Although it may seem challenging to reregister and retake the exam, it can be worth the extra effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify your GED retesting eligibility. Some testing sites will not permit test takers to retake tests until a certain time period has passed. In some cases you must wait at least 30 days. You might also have to retake the exam within a specific time frame, such as six months to one year, or your scores will be invalid. Contact the testing site to confirm the details before retaking the exam.

    • 2

Register for a GED refresher course or study group. While studying, concentrate on the sections with the most difficulty. Go to a local public library or bookstore and obtain practice test and GED study guides. Review GED study tips to enhance study sessions. Some testing centers will not allow you to retake the exam until you have received satisfactory scores on practice exams in the areas requiring retesting. These practice tests are usually administered through a local community college or other designated testing facility.

    • 3

Complete any applications or forms required for the GED retest registration process. Some testing sites require test takers to complete an application packet before retaking the test. Mail or deliver the required documents to the address listed on the application. Note the date and time of the test on a calendar or in a planner.

    • 4

Pay all required fees. Some sites charge fees per test and for each additional time that you retake any portion of the exam.

    • 5

Arrive at the designated testing site on time. Bring your state-issued photo ID and any other required documents. Some testing centers will prohibit late or "no-show" examinees from taking the exam. You will receive your GED by getting passing scores on each retest examination.
