How to Study for Your GED in Memphis

A GED, or General Educational Development, is a high-school equivalency degree designed for adults who quit school before receiving their high school diploma. Many places of employment require employees to have at least a GED. Studying for your GED is something you should take seriously, and there is plenty of help available, most of it free. All it really takes is discipline and drive to prepare for your GED test.

      Enroll in an Adult Education Program, which offers classes to help prepare you for the GED test. Bridges GED (901-452-5600) and Messick Adult Center (901-416-6670) are two such examples. At Bridges GED, students must take an entrance exam and commit to two separate four-hour sessions each week for 12 weeks. The Messick Adult Center offers smaller workshops for students to take as necessary --- you simply show up to as many or as few as you feel you need. GED classes are free through Messick Adult Center, as long as you are not enrolled in a regular school program. Bridges GED requires students to pay a $50 fee that is returned if the student completes the 12-week program.

      Take practice GED tests. Most Adult Education centers offer these for free. Taking a practice test is crucial, otherwise you'll walk in without knowing what the test is going to be like. You will be better prepared if you take the practice test at least once before taking the real thing. Some GED testing sites in Memphis, including Southwest Tennessee Community College and Trezevant Career & Technology Center, require you to take the practice GED test before you can take the real test.

      Visit a local tutoring center to to find a tutor that suits your needs. Memphis offers HopeWorks tutoring and Sylvan Learning Center, both of which offer GED test tutoring. HopeWorks is free, while Sylvan Learning Center can cost as much as $45 per hour. You can also check the University of Memphis classifieds for listings of student tutors who will help you study.       Search for books on GED studying tips from the local library or bookstore. Consider purchasing McGraw-HIll's "GED: The Most Complete and Reliable Study Program for the GED Tests," "The GED for Dummies" or "GED Complete Preparation, Edition 1." Local bookshops such as Burks Bookstore, David-Kidd or Bookstop Plus may have GED books or be able to order them, or you can try the Memphis Public Library.

      Find a local cafe that offers free Wi-Fi and do some online studying. Some local cafes in Memphis include Monkey Beans Coffee and Gifts, Java Cabana and Cafe Francisco.
