While many states mandate that individuals must obtain a security officer certificate, licensed security officers do not require specialized training to work in hospital security. However, a variety of training programs and courses provide security officers with a deeper knowledge of their role and responsibilities within a health care setting. These elective certification courses can also enhance a potential employee's credentials.
Individuals can take basic and advanced health care security officer courses. Topics discussed throughout a basic program include crisis intervention, emergency and behavioral units, vulnerabilities and risk in health care settings, and basic safety protection for the officer. Advanced course topics include methods of patrol, investigative techniques and procedures, electronic security technologies, workplace violence, and advancing professionalism.
A student's grasp of the topics discussed in each course is evaluated through a multiple-choice examination. Students can elect for a written copy or online version of the exam and must obtain a minimum passing grade of 75 percent for certification.
