A variety of security training programs are available at public and private facilities throughout the United States for individuals in the security field or for those interested in a career as a security officer. Some programs are taught by former security officers, while others are taught by individuals certified by the Department of Justice as law enforcement trainers.
Individuals interested in the general field of security can enroll in a basic introductory course. Programs are also available for individuals interested in particular fields of security, including school and campus security and correctional facilities.
Basic introductory security training courses are approximately 16 hours long. Topics addressed throughout a program include the legal and ethical aspects of security, emergency preparedness and safety, physical security, patrol procedures, electronic alarms and anti-terrorist training. Advanced and specialty training are available in defense and arrest tactics, SWAT building clearing, bomb recognition, domestic violence, riot squads, K-9 training and patrol vehicle operations.
