Security training covers a wide range of subject matter; participants learn workplace ethics, theft prevention, patrolling, observation techniques, investigation procedures, alarm security features, safety techniques, use of force, crowd control, fire prevention and report writing. On-the-job training enables participants to receive hands-on experience; however, employers may also employ outside companies to provide on-site training.
Completing an approved security training program is mandatory for security guards to attain certification. Depending on the state, requirements vary. In New York, for example, security certification requires eight hours of classroom instruction. In addition, participants must take and pass a state-issued examination.
Those interested in security training must have a clean background and pass a drug test. Employers often check a candidate's criminal background and fingerprint record. In most cases, a high school diploma is required for hire.
