SIA is a job requiring one to work in the security industry. The organization itself deals with controlling and monitoring the private security sector to make sure that it is running smoothly and efficiently within the sector. The duration of the training program is three modules, and when applying for a license, the application takes approximately 30 days to be approved.
There are various qualifications when receiving SIA training. Based on those presented on the SIA website, they include monitoring doors and entrances, dealing with money and valuables and supervising public space. The three modules focus on various aspects of the security industry and build upon one another. The first module deals with common security knowledge, the second with specialist knowledge and then the third on management. For the first module, 10 hours is required for completion and for the second and third, eight hours each is required.
Having a license enables one to work in the security industry. First you must successfully complete training. After this you apply for a license. To apply for a license, you must define exactly what you will need the license for; for example, security guard, key holder or door supervision. A license lasts for three years and costs approximately $250, as of 2010. It is illegal to work in the security industry without a license to do so.
Choosing which SIA training school is right for you really depends on two factors: where you are living now and where you plan to live for the duration of your career. Since there are different laws in different states and countries, it is important that you choose to undergo training in the area that you wish to live and work so that you are eligible to work in security in that area.
