The Institute of Logistics Management, or ILM, offers two certification tracks for logistics professionals. The certification track offers training in specialty areas, including transportation, international logistics and transportation of dangerous goods. The practitioner track is for already-certified logistics professionals who seek additional certification in areas such as the supply chain and motor carrier operations.
Online certification programs for logistics professionals include core courses in topics such as transportation systems and logistics principles. Students can then select electives from areas including hazmat compliance, inventory management and global logistics. Candidates who seek certification in a specialty area will need to complete required courses directly related to the specialty, notes the ILM.
The ILM cites an article by the Warehousing Education & Research Council that states that career options for certified logistics professionals include warehouse operations manager, supply chain manager and transportation manager. Indeed.com, an employment listings website, notes that as of October 2010, the average salary for a logistics coordinator is $41,000.
