Water-restoration training programs, such as the one offered by Restoration Training & Technology (RTT), offer students classroom and hands-on learning in the various phases of cleaning up water damage. Topics covered in class include water categories and the effects of water on building materials and contents. Hands-on training includes instruction in how to remove padding, baseboards and carpets.
Completion of a training course, such as the one offered by RRT, qualifies a water-damage restoration technician for certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning & Restoration Certification, or IICRC. Upon successfully completing a training course approved by the Institute, a candidate must pass an exam to become certified and then earn continuing education credits to maintain certification.
The IICRC notes on its website that certification benefits technicians by demonstrating their competency in the newest techniques and products used in water restoration. In addition, certified technicians are eligible to receive referrals from the IICRC and promote themselves through the Institute's website.
