APICS began offering certification in the early 1970s. At this time, many manufacturers realized that their methods of controlling inventory and scheduling resources were inefficient and prone to error. With the influx of international imports, especially in the auto industry, most manufacturers began to review the processes that controlled their plants. As a result, today's manufacturers are much more responsive--due to JIT (just in time) inventory management--and leaner, thanks to better control over the resources required to manufacture their products. Most modern manufacturers require APICS training for employees and certification for management staff.
APICS training prepares a candidate for exams in five areas; supply chain management, master resource scheduling, detailed resource scheduling, operations control and strategic resource use. Each section is a separate exam, though most candidates take two exams at one time, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Training is typically focused on the the section on which a candidate will be examined. An overall training program typically channels candidates through each of the exams until certification is complete.
You can use the self-study guides offered by APICS or enroll in a course. The self-study guides are comprehensive and beneficial if your schedule doesn't permit coursework. But a class where you can find a study group to go through the process with is invaluable. This group will not only provide critical study assistance for the challenging testing ahead, but can also provide crucial emotional support as testing can take several months. In addition, you form professional relationships that can be of tremendous assistance in future.
APICS training is not inexpensive. If your employer is offering on-site training, then the only cost is your time. Most employers, though, offer this training during the workday, so even this cost is mitigated. If you're taking the class on your own, expect to pay about $500 per course. The courses are typically offered in 18 hours of class time, scheduled over an intense weekend. Many employers will cover the cost of the course and basic travel, though you may need to pay for certain meals depending on your company's policy.
By being APICS-trained, you have a better understanding of how to manage your operations efficiently. Being a CPIM is a prerequisite for many manufacturers if you wish to advance your career. In addition, if you're designing software for the industry or wish to succeed in sales to this sector, a CPIM identifies you as a person with a deeper understanding of the industry, given you a competitive edge.
