Most employers require a high school diploma or equivalent for consideration. Priority is also given to applicants who have voluntarily completed either certification or associate degree programs in water quality or wastewater treatment technology. Typically, new hires begin as attendants or operators-in-training to learn skills through hands-on experience. Some treatment plants combine this training with formal classes as well.
Water treatment plant operators must be certified by the state in which they work. Many states have four levels of certification based upon the education and work experience of the individual. While a number of states honor certification from another state, requirements can vary widely from state to state.
It is crucial for water treatment operators to have proficient ability in math, chemistry and biology. They must also have basic mechanical knowledge as well as familiarity with computers and operation of computer-controlled equipment.
