Online MBA Certification

The online Master's of Business Administration (MBA) certificate is a certificate program that students complete 100% online. MBA certificates offer a short program in the same subjects that MBA students study. Students who are interested in a broad range of business topics can enter a program if they don't want to commit a few years to an MBA degree.
  1. Certification versus degree

    • There is less demand for certificate holders than MBA degree holders in the job market. The MBA degree has more classes and takes 2-3 years to complete. Most certificates can be earned in less than a year.

    Online classroom

    • Most online programs have online classrooms. They contain links to the syllabus, grades, professor's contact information and other details. Make sure you understand how to perform functions like submitting an assignment in the online classroom.

Ability to transfer to a degree

    • Since many of the MBA certificate classes are the core classes in the traditional program, you may be able to transfer the credits to a degree program in the future. If you don't have the time or money to commit to the full MBA program, earn the certification first. School advisers can help you manage your options if you think you may want to enroll in the traditional MBA degree program.

    Project Management

    • One benefit of a management or project management concentration in the MBA certificate program is that the classes prepare you to take the Project Management Institute's (PMI) Project Management test. Some schools even use the PMI books and materials to teach the course. Students that pass the test can earn a Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate. This certificate is sought out by employers who want someone with formal project management education.

    Admissions process

    • The admission process for enrolling in an online MBA certificate program differs depending on the school. Some schools require applicants to send application materials that traditional MBA degree students use (GMAT score, letters of recommendation, etc.). Others have a simpler process that require a letter of interest. Contact the admissions office to make sure you fit the criteria and understand the process.
