Ultralight Flight Schools

Ultralight aircraft is a term used to describe very lightweight, single or two-person airplanes. Some of the first ultralight aircraft were basically hang gliders fitted with a seat and a small engine installed to propel the craft. Today, a variety of ultralight aircraft are available, as are flight schools certified to teach ultralight enthusiasts the art of operating the aircraft.
  1. USUA Approved Schools

    • The United States Ultralight Association (USUA) is a non-profit organization devoted to the professional flight instruction of ultralight aircraft and light sport aviation pilots. The organization's main focus is to ensure promotion of all ultralight flight activities, and the safety of flight instruction. The USUA website offers a list of USUA approved schools with valid certifications and quality facilities that all ultralight students will need for adequate instruction. Though other schools may be available, schools with USUA memberships and affiliation are ideal.

    USPPA Approved Schools

    • The United States Powered Paragliding Association (USPPA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting powered paragliding, a large part of the ultralight community. The USPPA primary objective is a training program offering pilot ratings that show different levels of flight training accomplished. The USPPA and USUA partner together to ensure the advancement of ultralight flight as an activity and ensure that adequate training is offered. The USPPA also has a website with a list of USPPA schools that it has approved for quality certified instructors and training facilities.

    EAA Approved Schools

    • The Experimental Aircraft Association is an organization dedicated to the love of sport flying, including experimental and ultralight aircraft. The EAA website offers listings on quality schools specifically suited for ultralight training. The EAA also offers classes and training facilities at many of its chapters across the world and the United States.

    USHGA Approved Schools

    • The United States Hang-Gliding and Paragliding Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the love of all sport flying, particularly of foot-launched aircraft. The USHGA develops, standardizes and administers programs that enrich and promote safe flying practices and disseminates a variety of information on specific practices and programs to its current members. The USHGA works closely with the FAA, and has a list of schools that are also approved by the organization. Though the organization deals more so with foot-launched aircraft, ultralight schools and instruction are also a part of the organization's focus.
