Schools for Driving Instructors

Driving instructors teach new drivers how to operate an automobile. In order to become a driving instructor, driver education instruction preparation courses are required. These state-approved programs provide necessary training and retraining for driving instructors. Most states have a few options for prospective driving instructors to choose from.
  1. University of California Riverside

    • UCR offers a Driver Education and Training Credential to California residents who possess a California driver's license, a bachelor's degree and a clean driving record. The credential takes roughly one year to complete and costs $2,700 plus materials. This course provides students with a five-year preliminary credential. During the five years, applicants must teach one course per semester in order to be qualified to achieve the Clear Special Subjects Education and Training Credential.

    State University of New York Oswego

    • Through its Vocational Teacher Preparation program, SUNY Oswego offers New York residents a 12 month program in driver instruction certification. Students are not required to have a bachelor's degree before they can enroll in the driver instruction certification program, but they must have teaching or supervisory experience in driver's education. Students are taught fundamentals of safety, driver and traffic safety education, and trends and problems in driver education.

    New Jersey City University

    • New Jersey City University offers a non-degree driver education certification program. Certification can be achieved through online or on-campus classes. New Jersey City University offers five different courses in driver education. Hands-on instructing experience is provided with two of the courses offered.

    Wayne State University

    • Wayne State University in Farmington Hills, Michigan, offers a driver trainer certification program. Students must take four courses to achieve the designation of Driver Trainer, and the courses must be taken in order. The courses are seven and a half weeks in length and occur in the evenings. Enrollment is open to anyone possessing a high school diploma or equivalent. The minimum age for a Driver Trainer student is 21.
