Get a manual outlining the rules and regulations for driving in your state. Contact or visit the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for your state to obtain a copy, and begin to study it. There are also numerous websites that offer tutorials on expected test materials for a small cost or for free.
Get an instruction permit, if your state requires it. Some states require you to pass a written test, and often a vision test, to get a permit that allows you to practice driving with a licensed driver.
Practice driving. Make sure you follow the rules about driving with a licensed driver over a certain age. Start out in a parking lot or on quiet streets before you try driving in traffic. Also practice parking and backing up, because they could be on the driving test to get your driver's license.
Visit your local DMV for the written and driving test. Check to see what kind of identification you need, and be prepared to pay the required fee. Know that you might spend a lot of time at the DMV, especially if it is very crowded.
Take the written and driving tests. Take your time, and try not to stress. If you pass, you will get your license. Depending on the state, you might get your license immediately, or you might be given a temporary license to use until your permanent license arrives in the mail.
