Driver Education Teacher Training

Becoming a driving instructor for a public school or commercial license course involves more objectives than becoming a regular instructor. The training is designed to help sharpen skills and meet certification requirements in teaching driving education. Training will also help future instructors learn the rules and procedures concerning driving programs.
  1. Programs

    • The programs provided for driving education must be taken from an accredited school, college or university, though requirements may vary due to each state. To obtain certification, requirements may range between nine to 13 credits and include courses in classroom instruction, in-car instruction, driving safety and issues in driver education. To obtain certification, the person must make a "C" or above in each course offered.

    Enrollees

    • There is no restriction in enrolling into the program. Practically anyone can obtain a license for driving education, but the most common enrollees are teachers in kindergarten to 12th grade, undergraduate education majors, commercial driving school employees and current licensed education instructors who want to update their knowledge and skills.

    In-Car Instruction

    • Teacher assistants who supply guidance to a driving instructor can step into a teaching position but only as an in-car instructor. Certain prerequisites must be established for full certification. Assistants must be employed with a driving school or commercial driving program, have their license for a minimum of five years and be a high school graduate. Assistants must also have a good driving record and present professional conduct at all times.
