How to Get a Basic Adult Education

Basic adult education classes develop the skills that people need to be successful at home, in the workplace and in their communities. Programs are often overseen by the State Department of Education and are provided free of charge to residents.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your state's department of education to find out how to enroll in adult basic education courses. You may be redirected to a local state or community college or given the option to enroll in classes over the phone. Depending on availability, you may need to wait one semester for space to open up.

    • 2

Start your basic adult education program by taking general courses in reading, writing and math. Depending on the age group of the class (under 17 or over 17), the work may be geared more towards preparation for the General Educational Development (GED) test. Taking preparation classes allows you to waive the GED test fees in most states, although you may have to pay them if you fail the test and must retake it.

    • 3

Look for a course in general computer literacy. You'll get to learn the basics of word processing, Internet use and spreadsheet creation. These classes will build the skills you need to find and keep a job that uses technology.

    • 4

Take English as a second language classes if you need to learn the language. Look for a course that allows you to bring your whole family, but expect to be placed on a waiting list if you live in an area with a high demand for ESL classes.

    • 5

Sign up to take the GED test at your school. Take practice exams to be sure that you understand how to fill out your answer sheets. Once you get your GED, other continuing education programs will become available to you and potential employers will be required to give your work application the same weight as candidates with high school diplomas.

Find job-skills classes in your area. While the GED allows you to apply for more jobs, you'll need advice to polish your resume, work on interview skills and learn how to be a pleasant employee. These courses may be expensive if you take them via a private company, so check community centers and local colleges first.
