Most jobs in today's society require an employee know at least basic computer skills. An education in computers involves training in basic software programs, Windows operating systems and Internet basics. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that careers in computer technology, also known as information technology (IT), are expected to grow much faster than the average occupation. For those who need to learn critical computer skills or require a refresher course in computer education, there are several ways to gain a computer education and advance your computer skills.

For the average home user, basic computer classes provide a foundation in computer basics, computer operations and Internet surfing. Adult education courses are often scheduled at convenient times for working people, are inexpensive and provide adults with computer skills that can benefit them in their personal or business lives. Most adult education centers are in small communities and offer traditional computer courses, such as introduction to computers, tutorials in using various Microsoft software programs and basic Internet surfing tutorials.

      Sign up for classes through the Goodwill Community Foundation (GCF), which offers online learning opportunities to anyone who wants to improve the computer skills necessary to be successful in life. According to the Goodwill Community Foundation, more than 700,000 learners from around the world have taken advantage of the GCF online learning site. Classes offered by GCF include computer basics, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, Facebook 101, Internet basics and tutorials in other Microsoft software applications.
