How to Teach Computer Education

Computer skills are very important in today's school and workplace. Anyone of any age can learn to be computer literate. Teach your students, from beginning mouse skills to more complicated programs such as PowerPoint, with patience and by example. Allow them to explore computer programs and to learn by discovery. Students learn best in a relaxed atmosphere and when they can do lessons hands-on.

Start by teaching young children. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children are interested in computers and can learn the basic skills of proper procedure for turning on and shutting down as well as mouse skills. Most computers have a paint program in the accessories file. Children can draw and the program shows them where the cursor is in relation to how they move the mouse. Another idea is the Starfall website, which is designed specifically for children who can't read; they learn to move the mouse with non-written directions. Students follow a pointing hand and links that sparkle to show the user where to go next.

Start your students using the keyboard. First- through fourth-graders are ready to start using the keyboard. They can do beginner writing assignments or practice spelling words. They can learn to write and print letters to friends or relatives. They can continue to perfect their mouse skills by highlighting text, checking spelling and moving text within their writing. They should also be able to start supplementing their classwork with the computer.

Have your students research something. Internet scavenger hunts are a great way to get upper elementary students navigating the Internet within safe boundaries. Scavenger hunts are available in science and history and for virtual field trips. Each activity has prescreened websites so you can be sure of Internet safety ,but the students must hunt information at the sites to finish their activity.

Give your students an extra boost in their other subjects by creating a PowerPoint presentation on a chapter or section of their textbook. The students learn computer skills while presenting information in new and different ways to their peers. Start by making a presentation together about a subject everyone knows well, such as themselves or their school. Guide them through the steps to add in backgrounds and text. Then students can make more complicated screens by adding animation, music and pictures. Finally, students can make and give presentations to their peers for their other classes.
