How to Succeed as an Adult Student

It's easy to enroll in adult education programs, since many are provided as a free service to the community, but it can be hard to succeed in school. Learning to balance school, work and family life can be a challenge for some people.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule your classes during times that your children are at extracurricular activities. Avoid babysitting costs by making sure that one adult will always be at your home while the others are at school.

    • 2

Spend at least 30 minutes each night going over your classwork. If you're taking adult education classes at a university, you'll have to allocate more time to prepare for exams and write papers. Give up some of your television time in order to study.

    • 3

Find out which resources are available to help you. Most schools offer tutoring, although it may be hard to find time to come in for it. Talk to the head of the tutoring program and see if it's possible to schedule weekend sessions.

    • 4

Anticipate a steep learning curve if you've been away from school for many years. You may have to work harder in the beginning to keep up with the class, but you should pick up the pace after a few weeks.

    • 5

Speak with your teacher if your work or family obligations make it impossible for you to complete an assignment by the deadline. Raising the issue as soon as you know about it is much better than waiting until the last minute to ask for an extension. Expect college professors to be stricter with assignments than night school or community teachers.

    • 6

Set priorities for your responsibilities. Watch that your performance at work or home doesn't suffer due to your school obligations. Explain to your employer that you are taking adult education courses and can't work late on certain nights.

    • 7

Visualize how your life will improve after you succeed in the adult education program. For example, after you get your GED or computer training, many employment opportunities may open up to you as well as additional educational options, like college coursework.
