Ideas for Organizing a Self-Help Class at the VFW

The Veterans of Foreign Wars dates back to the early 1900s when military men arrived home from the Spanish-American War required medical care and there was none available. Veterans connected with each other, formed VFW Posts and fought for veterans' benefits. The VFW sponsors educational programs for both community members and veterans. Federal and state governmental agencies provide funding for self-help classes for veterans as well.
  1. Readjustment

    • Military members serving overseas must readjust to civilian life upon returning home. In addition, many service members utilize veteran educational benefits and attend college upon leaving the service. This means sitting in classes with younger, inexperienced students. Self-help classes on readjustment to civilian and student life include formulating success plans, reviewing organization skills and time management.

    Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

    • PTSD is an anxiety disorder that is caused by a traumatic event. Military members who served in active duty at wartime are at an increased risk for PTSD upon returning home. Treatment includes medication, therapy and self-help groups. Organizing a self-help class on PTSD at a local VFW Post provides the group outlet that many veterans need for a full recovery.

    Substance Abuse

    • Veterans have drug and alcohol problems like everyone else, however, veterans are less likely to ask for help. They are proud of their service to their country and are supposed to be self-disciplined, which is what the military teaches. Veterans are more likely to attend a self-help class on substance abuse at the VFW with other veterans, where they feel comfortable and are not judged or frowned upon.

    Chronic Illness

    • Veterans exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War may develop chronic illnesses because of that exposure. Gulf War Syndrome includes different conditions that have similar symptoms, which are a result of chemical exposure. Self-help classes regarding Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndrome provide veterans with a support network of others experiencing similar health problems.
