Learn moves, chants and songs to incorporate into a step routine. You can get inspiration from a more experienced step coach, music videos, cheerleader or ROTC routines. Also check out various dance forms like Hip Hop or at step shows.
Select a story or theme for the routine with the team. The story or routine should be at least ten minutes and include elements about the school or organization the team represents such as the name and when it was founded.
Teach routine or new elements to the step team. Collaborate with the team to conform the new elements to the team's specific style which may include jumping and wide arm movements.
Coach, remind and instruct the step team while they practice or perform by yelling hints such as stay in time or straighten those arms.
Set a weekly practice schedule for the step team. Step teams should practice at least once a week for about an hour.
Mentor the team members by encouraging them to contribute to the community through volunteer projects or opportunities like cleaning a stretch of highway, sorting food bank food or tutoring younger children. Coaching includes being a positive role model especially for the younger step teams.
