How to Be a Captain of a Drill Team

Drill teams perform every day at high school games and events around the country. Each member of the drill team is important to the performance, but the drill team captain carries the largest responsibility. Successful drill team captains are strong leaders. They are consistent in their efforts and compel their squad to be the best at all times. Becoming a drill team captain requires consistent effort, knowledge and ambition. With continuous hard work, you may become a drill team captain.

      Find out the requirements for drill-team participation. Each school has specific requirements regarding requisite classes and the grade level you must be in. Speak with the current drill-team coach or captain to find out what the requirements are for your school.

      Try out for the drill team. Use the information your obtained from the coach or captain to help you meet the requirements for drill team tryouts. Be on time to the tryout and listen attentively to instructions and suggestions provided by leaders and current team members. Learn everything you can about the organization and operations of the drill team.

      Read the drill-team constitution or team rules. Most teams have specific written requirements for becoming an officer or leader. Become familiar with these requirements and begin implementing the steps as mandated by your program.

      Arrive on time, or early, to all practices and drill-team performances. Generally, you will not be able to join the team and become captain the same season. Becoming captain will require you to show consistent reliability. Aim to always arrive on time, prepared to perform and with all of your supplies. Always be clean and well-groomed. A neat and tidy appearance will help you in your quest to be captain.

      Keep a smile on your face and have a positive attitude. The best leaders support their team as a whole. Know your routines and team requirements. Practice at home and continue to improve upon your own skills while helping to strengthen the other members of your team, and maybe you will be the next team captain.
