Contact the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) to ascertain which colleges have ski teams and offer scholarships. Receive the USCSA's advice before considering which colleges you wish to apply for. Ask about the leading national colleges if you believe yourself to be a very strong competitive skier with a strong track record in competitions.
Browse through the academic and athletic scholarships offered by the colleges with ski teams. Read about the scholarships offered, which divide into three different categories: full rides, partial scholarships and walk-ons. Decide which scholarship level is most suitable to your ability or your academic plans before submitting your application to different colleges.
Submit your application to the college academically, including your ski team scholarship application. Fill out all of the necessary elements of the application form, including listing your high school athletic director or ski coach as one of your references, as this adds real strength to your application.
Attend your college application and scholarship interviews --- some colleges will host this as a single interview, while many others will interview you separately for the academic and ski team scholarship side of your application. Be attentive and interested and ask questions relevant to the interview you are in. Show interest in both the academic and skiing aspects of the college.
Contact the USCSA and ask them about colleges that have club-level teams. Emphasize that you are not looking for a collegiate scholarship scheme for top-level skiers, but that you are a keen skier looking to compete in a low-pressure, fun environment.
Approach colleges that have club-level ski teams with a regular academic application. Mention your aptitude and intent to get involved with the college ski team during your application, as this will show a college applications officer that you have considered the college from both an academic and leisure perspective.
Ask about the college ski team during your admissions interview. Show an interest in the college as a whole, making sure you ask questions about the academic side of the establishment, such as the grade-point average of last year's graduates, as well as demonstrating that you are keen to get involved with the club-level ski team.
Attend a tryout session for the college's club-level or varsity ski team. Note that these teams vary greatly in standards, with some colleges having very competitive and strong club ski teams while others do not require a skier to have any racing experience.
