The Washington Indian Gaming Association (WIGA) offers around 33 different scholarships for Native American students living in Washington State. The scholarships are categorized by community/technical college, undergraduate levels and graduate/professional levels. Around $50,000 is awarded in scholarships. According to the WIGA scholarship brochure, members of WIGA and American Indians living in Washington are eligible to apply for a scholarship, even if you've already received the scholarship a previous year. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians provides four $10,000 scholarships to California Indian students. The scholarship is the Rodney T. Mathews, Jr., Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of Morongo tribal member Rodney T. Mathews who passed away in 2003. The scholarships are renewable for a second year if criteria have been met and progress has been made. According to the Morongo website, to be eligible for a scholarship the student must be a member of a federally recognized California Tribe, must be a full-time student at an accredited college or university and must be involved in the Native American community. The Normandie Casino has a scholarship program that is meant to encourage Normandie Casino employees and the educational system of Gardena, California. The program states that students who receive a B or better get $100 for each school subject. The funds are then matched and placed into a high school scholarship program funded by the Normandie Casino B or Better Foundation. Select students from Gardena high schools, and children of casino employees, are then chosen to receive a portion of the funds. In order to be eligible for the scholarship funds, academic achievement is a must as well as community service and an essay.
