How to Cite a Textbook in a Bibliography

A bibliography, also known as a works cited, is an important paper of any research paper. It lets the reader know where you got your information. Essentially, it's a way to give credit where credit is due. Likewise, it acts as an easy way for a reader to find out where they could acquire additional information about the information your paper covered.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the indention formatting on the writing program you are using. The first line of a citation is not indented. Any following lines are, however, indented half an inch.

    • 2

Write the author's last name, listing the last name before the first name. Example: "Wysocki, Anne." However, if there is more than one author, list the subsequent authors by first name then last name, with a comma between each author. Example: "Wysocki, Ann, and Tim Reed." For three authors: "Wysocki, Ann, Tim Reed, and Amanda Smith." For more than three authors, you may list all of the authors or simply put the first author's name and then add "et al." Example: "Wysocki, Ann, et al." Always put a period after the final author's name.

    • 3

Write the title of the textbook in italics followed by a period. Example: The Curious Reader.

    • 4

Write the edition number if there is one, followed by a period. Write the number (in numerals) followed by the appropriate suffix ("rd" for "third, "nd" for "second" and so on) and then "ed" and a period. Example: 3rd ed. If there are not multiple editions, you may leave this out.

    • 5

Write the city of publication. You can usually find this on the title page of the textbook. Some textbooks might list several cities. Choose the one closest to you. For big cities like New York or San Francisco, you don't need to put the state, but for smaller, lesser-known cities, you may put the state. Example: Logan, UT. After you list the city (and state, if that's the case), put a colon, not a period.

    • 6

Write the name of the publisher. This is also often on the title page. Example: Utah State UP. Follow the name of the publisher with a comma, not a period.

    • 7

Write the year that the textbook was published followed by a period.

    • 8

Write the format of the textbook followed by a period. This will typically be written as: Print. You are now completed with the bibliography.
