How Do You Write a Bibliography on a Book?

Many documents, articles or essays require a bibliography or reference page. This is the best way to acknowledge where you got your information and to give credit to the author(s) of that information. The two main formatting styles for citing sources are the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the American Psychological Association (APA). In addition to your bibliography page, you also need to cite source information within the text when you paraphrase, directly quote or use a fact from a source.

  1. Modern Language Association (MLA)

      Use the following formats to cite a book in MLA style. Use italics for the book's title.

      Book with one author: Last name, First name. Book Title. Publication location: Publisher, Year it was published.

      Book with two to five authors: Last name, First name, First name Last name & First name Last name. Book Title. Publication location: Publisher, Year it was published.

      Book with six or more authors: Last name et al. Book Title. Publication location: Publisher, Year it was published. (See additional information about this citation in Step 4 below.)

      Book with no author: Book title. Publication location: Publisher, Year of Publication.

      Center the word "Reference" at the top of your bibliography page. Place the first line of each resource flush with the left margin. Indent subsequent lines a half-inch from the margin.

      List each resource on your bibliography page in alphabetical order according to the author's last name. If no author is given, use the book's title to determine where to place the reference. Do not include articles such as "A," "An" or "The" when you alphabetize.

      Cite two to five authors for one resource by listing the authors in alphabetical order. List the first author by last name first and the rest of the authors by first name first. Place commas between each author's name and a period at the end of the last author's name.Two to five authors should be separated with commas with an ampersand ("&") between the last two authors. Six or more authors should be listed by writing the first author's last name followed by an "et al."

    American Psychological Association (APA)

      Use the following formats to cite a book in APA style. Italicize the book title.

      Book with one author: Last name, First name initial. (Year of Publication). Book Title. Publication location: Publisher.

      Book with two to five authors: Last name, First name initial, First name initial Last name & First name initial Last name. (Year of Publication). Book Title. Publication location: Publisher.

      Book with six or more authors: Last name et al. (Year of Publication). Book Title. Publication location: Publisher.

      Book with no author: Book title. (Year of Publication) Publication location: Publisher.

      Center the word "Reference" on the top of the bibliography page. List sources with a hanging indent. The first line of the reference should be flush with the left margin with any subsequent lines indented a half-inch.

      List each resource on your bibliography page in alphabetical order according to the author's last name. If the author is not known, the citation should be arranged by the source title, excluding "A," "An" and "The."

      Give the first letter for the first name of an author in each resource listed unless there are six or more authors. Two to five authors should be separated with commas with an ampersand ("&") between the last two authors. Six or more authors should be listed by writing the first author's last name followed by "et al."
