Accredited Gunsmithing Schools

Gunsmithing involves the design, repair and modification of firearms. A good gunsmith needs to know machining skills as well as metal finishing, bluing and plating. Some elect to move into the trade after working as machinists, but other gunsmiths get a formal education in the craft. Relatively few educational institutions offer degrees and certificates in gunsmithing, but a few do.
  1. Colorado School of Trades

    • The Colorado School of Trades' gunsmithing program is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. The school is in Lakewood, Colorado, in a 20,000-square-foot facility featuring engine lathes, drill presses, vertical milling machines, a bead blaster and a variety of other equipment. The 1,800-hour gunsmithing program leads to an associate of occupational studies degree.

    Trinidad State College

    • Trinidad State College, in Colorado, offers two-year degrees and has a student body of about 2,200. Its gunsmithing program dates back to 1947. The school's fully accredited program takes place over two years. Training involves machining, firearms finishing, stockmaking, and specialized courses including Revolversmithing, Checkering, Shotgunsmithing, Pistolsmithing and Competitive Rifles.

    Lassen Community College

    • Lassen Community College is in Susanville, California. The school offers both certificates and associate's degrees through a variety of gunsmithing programs. Programs include an associate of science degree in firearms repair, an associate of science degree in general gunsmithing, a certificate of accomplishment in long guns, a certificate of accomplishment as a gunsmith machinist and metal finisher, a certificate of accomplishment in pistolsmithing and a certificate of accomplishment in riflesmithing.

    Yavapai Gunsmithing School

    • Yavapai Gunsmithing School is located in Yavapai County, Arizona. The school offers two programs for potential gunsmiths, both of which are two years long. The first is an associate of applied science degree in gunsmithing. This program involves training in machining, stockmaking and gun theory. The second program leads to a gunsmithing journeyman certificate, which aims to prepare students for employment in a gunsmithing shop through education not only in gunsmithing, but also in entrepreneurship and communication skills.

    Murray State College

    • Murray State College is in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. The school's gunsmithing program leads to an associate in applied science degree. Training includes technical math, blueprinting, machining, gunsmithing theory and stockmaking, as well as more general classes such as American history and English.

    Online Schools

    • A variety of online schools offer gunsmithing certificates and degrees. Generally these programs are far less comprehensive than those offered on a physical campus. Because training takes place online, students do not receive valuable hands-on education with the tools they will need to know well in order to work in a highly technical and potentially dangerous trade like gunsmithing.
