Since 1947, the Colorado School of Trades has been specializing in gunsmithing and has become the largest gunsmithing school in the United States. The program offers training in all areas of gunsmithing. Coursework is broken into four parts: basic courses, machine shop courses, stockmaking courses, and design and function courses. Basic courses cover topics including shop math, hand tool operation and blueprint reading. Learn welding and milling in the machine shop course. Stockmaking teaches use of firearms, gun sights and stock finishes. Trigger assembly, design, function and business aspects are taught in the final course hours. In 14 months, students will obtain the knowledge necessary to begin a career in gunsmithing.

Trinidad State is the oldest community college in Colorado and has been offering the Gunsmithing Degree Program since 1947. The course takes two years to complete, and covers the basic skills and concepts needed for a career in gunsmithing. Courses include bench metal, rifle repair and stockmaking. Fully accredited and completely online, Ashworth College offers a 19-course career diploma in gunsmithing. Students learn troubleshooting, repair, firearm assembly and basic maintenance. Lessons include information on triggers, safeties, scope installation, stock repair and stock refinishing. Courses also include assignments on ammunition and information on a variety of different firearms.

Penn Foster offers gunsmithing education completely online. In approximately five months, students can earn a career diploma in the gunsmithing field. Coursework is broken into five instructional segments. Instruction set one includes learning strategies and getting started in the firearms industry. Instruction set two teaches about firearm identification and gun stocks. Instruction set three covers gun sights, rifles and basic machine work. Instruction set four covers muzzleloaders, metalwork and shotguns. The final instruction set educates students on handguns, ammunition, basic ballistics and the basic business skills needed for starting a business in gunsmithing.
