RN-Paramedic Transition Programs

For a nurse interested in being on the front lines, making the move to paramedic might be the perfect way to live the dream. This type of transition allows greater freedom in scope of practice and many new job opportunities.
  1. General Information

    • Finding a transition program from nurse to paramedic takes a little more work than finding programs that bridge the gap from medic to RN, but they are out there. Before considering such a program, you should look into your state's requirements, because you might be able to challenge the paramedic boards with your nursing license. Most states would still require a few courses, but it can be the fastest way to get your dual license. Some of these board challenges require you to currently carry your EMT-Basic card.

    Creighton University

    • Creighton University offers an intensive one-week program. By the end of this course, an RN or LPN is allowed to sit for the National Registry's EMT Certification exam. They usually offer this intensive program a few times per year. The emphasis of the program is teaching nurses the differences between a pre-hospital setting and the clinical environment of a hospital.

    Eastern New Mexico

    • Eastern New Mexico University has a transition program. You will have to dust off your old transcripts to get in, because you must have eight credits of anatomy and physiology. The program accepts CNPs, PAs, RTs, and RNs. You must also have your current ACLS, PALS, PHTLS and PEPP, but if you are a working nurse you are probably up-to-date on these requirements.

    Genesys Health Systems

    • Another provider is Genesys Health Systems in Michigan. This program is relatively new, but has won the Governor's Award of Excellence and has been featured in US News America's Best Hospitals 2009-10. You would need to verify that this program qualifies in your area because it is specifically designed to challenge the licensure for the state of Michigan. This program also requires you have your EMT-Basic prior to enrolling.
