The fifth oldest dental school in the United States, Howard University's College of Dentistry has trained thousands of dental professionals. The Dental Hygiene program awards a Certificate in dental hygiene and is approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. With campuses in the Bethesda and Germantown, Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, the Dental Assistants Training School (DATS) of Maryland offers on-the-job training for those students interested in working in a dental office. Training focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to work in the dental field. Upon completion of training, students will be qualified to find work as a dental hygienist or an office worker or receptionist in a dental office.

At the Medical Education Campus of Northern Virginia Community College, located in Springfield, just outside of Washington, D.C., offers medical and dental degrees for more than 3,500 students who want to enter the health care professions. The campus is a technologically specialized campus dedicated to training nursing and allied health professionals. Students can obtain an associate degree in dental hygiene and offers a 32-chair dental clinic for students.
