New York Apprenticeship Programs

Participating in an apprenticeship program gives people hands-on experience to do a specific job and the necessary book knowledge to enhance what they are learning in the field. Apprentices will work with a more experienced worker in any of a variety of fields including, but not limited to roofing, automotive repair, sheet metal and electrical. Apprentices are paid an entry-level wage that increases as they gain experience. There are a number of New York apprenticeship programs available, each with different requirements. However, they don't all accept new apprentices throughout the year. Prospective applicants may need to check in periodically to find out if applications are being accepted for a program they are interested in.
  1. Central New York Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee

    • The Central New York Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, JATC, will train participants to become a union-affiliated electrician. Hourly pay is based on a percentage of what a trained journeyman typically earns, and ranges from $12 to $24 an hour. This covers all areas between Cooperstown and Syracuse, from Cortland to Thendara. Applicants must also have a high school diploma or a GED, a "C" or better in high school algebra, and be able to pass the aptitude test. The apprenticeship program lasts for five years. During the first three years, participants will go to school one day a week and work the other four. For the last two years, they will work full-time while attending classes in the evening.

    Labor Technical College

    • The New York City District Council of Carpenters maintains The Labor Technical College for training their apprentice carpenters, dock builders, cabinet makers and floor coverers. The apprenticeship programs last for four years, with the exception of cabinet maker, which spans for five. Every 11 weeks, from September to June, apprentices will go through a week of classroom instruction. Educational instruction is unpaid time, but it won't cost apprentices anything either. For the remaining time, apprentices will work on a construction site, honing skills among more experienced workers. Applicants must be at least 17-years-old, with a high school diploma or GED and a Social Security card to apply. All eligible applicants will also go through an oral interview and a substance abuse test.
