Apprenticeship Programs in New Hampshire

Apprenticeship programs provide classroom instruction and hands-on training for highly skilled careers. There are several apprenticeship programs in New Hampshire in a variety of professions, including culinary arts, plumbing and electrical. Apprenticeships for these professions require a two to four year commitment, depending on the individual program. Each program requires a minimum number of hours for classroom instruction and hands-on training. Participants benefit from learning under skilled professionals in each trade.
  1. Electrical

    • Electrician apprenticeships are offered through the Department of Education.

      The New Hampshire Bureau of Electrical Safety requires completion of an apprenticeship program before being eligible to take the Journeyman's certification exam. The apprenticeship program is a four-year program with 8,000 hours of practical training and 576 hours of related classroom instruction. All apprentices are employed by a master electrician in the state of New Hampshire. Training programs are available through the Department of Education, Community College System of New Hampshire and IEBW Local Union 490 Joint Apprenticeship Training Program.

    Plumbing

    • Plumbers must complete an apprenticeship before becoming a Journeyman.

      Completion of a plumbing apprenticeship is required before taking the Journeyman's certification examination in New Hampshire. Apprentices are employed by a master plumber, complete 8,000 hours of work experience and on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom instruction over a four-year period. Apprentices submit proof of completion to the State Apprenticeship Council and take a 10 hour OSHA construction course before taking the Journeyman's exam. Training programs for the plumbing apprenticeship program are available through the Department of Education, Plumber's Licensing Board and NH Plumbers and Pipefitters UA Local 131.

    Metal Working

    • Metal working apprenticeship programs are 4 years long.

      Mech Tech of New Hampshire is a metal working apprenticeship program consisting of 8,000 hours of practical training and 577 hours of classroom instruction over a 4 year period. Apprentices are paid to work during the day while they gain hands-on experience and attend classes in the evenings. Apprentices who complete the program earn Journeyman's certification. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have strong math skills and mechanical aptitude. Apprenticeships are available in the Newport/Claremont/Upper Valley and Manchester/Derry/Nashua areas.

    Culinary

    • Culinary apprentices train under executive chefs.

      The American Culinary Federation offers two and three year apprenticeships in New Hampshire. These programs combine technical classroom learning with on-the-job training under an executive chef. Apprentices must be at least 17 years old. They are required to register with the United States Department of Labor, join the American Culinary Federation as a student and complete 12 courses in culinary education through an accredited institution.
