Colleges for Sports Massage Therapy

Sports massage is an increasingly important and popular area of massage therapy, used to help athletes heal and to get them back in the game. Colleges across the country offer massage and, specifically, sports massage programs, allowing students to earn either Associate or Bachelor of Arts degrees.
  1. Fremont College

    • Fremont College, with two locations in Los Angeles and Cerritos, California, offers both a diploma program in massage therapy and an Associate of Science in Sports and Rehabilitation Therapy program. The Sports and Rehabilitation Therapy program covers many types of massage therapy, from basic massage to Swedish, Shiatsu and deep tissue massage, as well as physiology and anatomy, so that the graduate will have a more thorough understanding of what goes into sports rehabilitation. Graduates can become medical massage therapists with this degree, working with doctors in private practice or in hospitals. They can also work with sports teams, chiropractors and rehabilitation therapists.

    The Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy

    • The Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania started in 1986 and aims to give graduates a through understanding of all aspects of massage therapy. The school offers a comprehensive course covering all aspects of massage. This includes focused study in sports massage and sports and flexibility training, but also includes other classes in massage, anatomy, Reiki, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. They also sponsor massage clinics and have continuing education programs for massage professionals.

    National Holistic Institute

    • The National Holistic Institute (NHI) has campuses in Emeryville, San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles (Encino) and Petaluma, California. Their program aims to provide students with a wide knowledge of massage practices, but focuses on helping athletes perform better with massage therapy. Students learn about how massage before, after and in between sporting events can improve an athlete's performance, and learn the techniques that apply to different sports. Students also learn about how to prevent and deal with injuries, how to apply heat and ice and how trigger points operate.
