Schools for Massage Therapy Certification

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the number of jobs in massage therapy will grow by 19 percent through 2018. Becoming a massage therapist takes training and education through certification programs available across the country. Be sure you're enrolling in a high-quality school by checking a referral organization such as the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, which lists programs by city and state.
  1. American & European Massage Clinic

    • Earn a certification in massage through the American & European Massage Clinic. The program consists of 500 hours of Russian medical massage training, with topics covering pathology, physiology, anatomy, ethics, Eastern massage, reflexology, neuromuscular therapy, deep tissue and sports massage. Classes offer low student-to-instructor ratios. The program is offered in the evening or morning and lasts about six months. A free introductory class is available and includes a drawing for a scholarship. The American & European Massage Clinic is accredited by the National Certification Board and a member of the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals organization.

    Academy of Massage Therapy

    • The Academy of Massage Therapy offers a 52-week program on Western-style massage, with topics in prenatal massage, palpation, Swedish massage, medical massage, HIV/AIDS, hydrotherapy, anatomy and physiology, practice management, Japanese deep tissue massage and neuromuscular therapy. Students get more than 1,000 hours of hands-on experience. Graduates may take the National Certification Exam. The program is available with Spanish-speaking instructors as well. Students interested in taking their studies further may sign up for the school's eight-week spa therapy certification program, learning aromatherapy, body wraps, cocoons, brushing, mud masks, etiquette and supplies.

      Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and be at least age 18 (interested students age 16 or 17 may enroll with parental permission). A physician's examination is also required. The academy is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation and was the first New Jersey massage school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    American Institute of Massage Therapy

    • Earn your massage therapy certification in 31 weeks at the American Institute of Massage Therapy. The program covers topics such as musculoskeletal systems, sports massage, hydrotherapy, Swedish massage, nutrition, pathology and massage therapy fundamentals. Students get hands-on training through 80 hours of clinical practice at nearby athletic events. Students interested in the field of sports massage may take their studies further with the school's sports massage therapy program, which builds on the standard massage therapy program and includes further hours of athletic practice, Asian bodywork methods, reflexology, aromatherapy and specialty massage techniques.

      Admission to the school requires a high school diploma or GED. Students must be at least 18 years old or older. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, approved by the American Medical Massage Association and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, International Sports Massage Federation and Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals organization.
