Schools That Offer Careers in Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineers work in the energy, manufacturing, environmental and medicine fields to combine biology, physics, math and chemistry to solve problems and create new products. Engineers work in laboratories, handling and mixing materials, transforming them into a testable product. Degrees in chemical engineering are available at the bachelor's and graduate levels of study in colleges across the country.
  1. Princeton University

    • Earn a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at Princeton University, where the four-year program offers topics in biomolecular engineering, thermodynamics, chemical reaction engineering, process control, optimization of chemical processes, ethics and technology, energy transport and energy solutions for the next century. Core classes are also required. Students interested in continuing their studies in chemical engineering enroll in Princeton's Master of Chemical Engineering or Ph.D. programs.
Candidates must have no previous college experience. Princeton does not accept transfer students or those who have already earned college credit elsewhere. The school recommends students have a high school diploma showing two years of laboratory science (with physics and chemistry), four years of a single foreign language, two years of history and classes in the visual or performing arts.

    North Carolina State University

    • Housed in North Carolina State University's Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is the school's Master of Science in chemical engineering. The master's program is two years and includes classroom study and a thesis research project. Students who wish to avoid the thesis project enroll in the Master of Chemical Engineering program, which includes additional courses instead of the thesis. Classes include polymer technology and engineering, transport processes, thermodynamics of chemical and phase equilibria, polymer rheology, protein purification, polymer blends and alloys, diffusion in polymers and thermodynamics.
Students participate in organizations such as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers and two engineering honor societies: Theta Tau (general engineering) and Omega Chi Epsilon (chemical engineering).
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in a field related to chemical engineering or science with a minimum grade-point average of 3.3. Students may apply their coursework to the school's Ph.D. program. Financial aid is available through teaching and research assistantships and fellowships.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Begin your education in chemical engineering with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT's four-year program includes topics in laboratory chemistry, thermodynamics and kinetics, separation processes, fluid mechanics, chemical kinetics and reactor design, differential equations, kinetics of enzyme inhibition and organic structure determination. Students complete general core classes such as humanities, arts, social sciences and communications.
MIT offers two related degrees: a Bachelor of Science in chemical-biological engineering and a general Bachelor of Science with a curriculum that combines chemistry, chemical engineering, management and economics. MIT offers a Master of Science in chemical engineering practice, a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering practice and a combined Doctor of Philosophy/Doctor of Science in chemical engineering.
Applicants to the bachelor's program require a high school diploma. Applicants to the graduate programs require a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or sciences, three letters of recommendation and Graduate Record Exam scores.
