While fashion merchandising does involve knowledge of the arts, business skills are essential for this career path. Washington Business Week puts high school students into "corporations" through which they learn teamwork, leadership, and business tactics. The aim of this camp is to prepare students for the work force by teaching how to manage money, network, and utilize business etiquette. The program lasts for a single week, but a student can advance through several levels.

The summer program for art and design at Cornish College of the Arts is aimed at educating high school students in the arts for three weeks. Students get to explore the visual arts in a professional setting, allowing them to learn new techniques and network with other artistically-inclined students. Students build their portfolios through the study of the arts, and those interested in fashion merchandising will gain an understanding of the other side of the fashion industry, which is design.
