Permanent Makeup Training Schools in Washington State

Permanent cosmetics involves the use of inks and skin-piercing implements to create a tattooed makeup application with a permanent effect. The most common types of permanent makeup application include eyeliner, eyebrows, and lip color. The Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals, a trade organization for permanent makeup artists founded in 1990, offers certification and recommends training centers across the United States.
  1. Chrysalis Clinic

    • The Chrysalis Clinic offers three types of training programs and includes a supply kit and instruction manuals in the tuition cost of each course. The beginner training has two to four students and lasts eight days for $3,750, as of 2010. The course teaches students how to select color and tools, and how to apply eyeliner, eyebrow, lip liner, and lip color. Students who prefer a one-on-one course may elect for independent instruction with the same beginners curriculum, costing $4,950 as of 2010. A custom extended two-day course for previously trained artists costs $1,200, as of 2010, and teaches the SofTap hand method and the use of the Noveau Contour Digital rotary machine for application. Students receive a certificate of completion once they have finished 65 hours of classroom and 35 hours of at-home study, performed three each of eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip liner procedures, and passed a written exam.

    DermaTech Permanent Cosmetics

    • DermaTech Permanent Cosmetics offers a two-part beginner training course for $2,950, as of 2010, that covers different equipment types, needle types, practice on synthetic skin, sterilization and sanitation, state law, anatomy, and skin ailments. The supply kit that students receive in the cost of tuition includes textbooks, a mannequin, and a box with a tattoo machine, pigments, sanitary supplies and record-keeping materials. The 65-hour course lasts six days and when combined with the 35-hour home study is valid for 100 credit hours of education. Students perform six permanent makeup applications and receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the course.

    Faces by Design

    • Faces by Design offers two group continuing-education classes for existing permanent makeup artists at their Renton studio. The two-day training "Because Color Matters," costing $1,800 (as of 2010), teaches students color theory, the permanent cosmetic color creation process, and how to choose color based on skin undertones. Students will learn how to make color adjustments and corrections and receive a certificate of completion following 16 hours of classroom attendance. The five-hour Saline/Salt Lightening course is $350 (as of 2010) and trains students how to lighten and make corrections and adjustments to permanent makeup applications using salt. The process can correct a poor application and reduces the risk of an allergic reaction using a material naturally present in the body. Students receive a certificate of completion following the five-hour class that can be presented to the PPIB Insurance Brokerage, a company that insures tattoo artists, to obtain insurance coverage.
