The University of Puget Sound promotes music in the community through its Community Music program. The program provides music instruction to encourage community members' creativity and musical potential by providing year-round instruction to residents of the Puget Sound region. The college setting encourages students to stay motivated and interested. The program offers music instruction to adults and children in chamber music, group piano for children, brass instruments, harp and violin. The program also teaches Suzuki and Kindermusik instructional methods.
The Seattle Music School employs professional music teachers to teach piano and violin to individual students. The school teaches both young children and adults as well as beginning and advanced students. Instructors emphasize music appreciation as the basis for learning how to play an instrument. The school devotes attention to helping students understand music and recognize the pleasure that one can feel when playing and listening to music. Students learn how to maintain correct posture and position fingers to avoid stress or injury. The school invites students to take advantage of its staff for personalized coaching before competitions, auditions and programs.
The Tacoma Music School teaches violin and piano to individual students of all ages and levels. The school teaches students in Tacoma, Puyallup and Federal Way, allowing them to develop the skills that will allow them to participate in the local youth symphony and perform in regional concerts. The music school hosts a yearly recital where family members and friends can hear the students perform.
Spokane's music center, Holy Names Music Center, offers local residents the opportunity to choose from a variety of programs that will allow them to learn and appreciate music. The Center, which has taught music in the Spokane area for over 100 years, offers instruction for adults and children. Programs include music programs for young children who participate together with an adult, instruction in the Suzuki method (which teaches children to listen to the musical "language" and reproduce it with the violin, viola or cello), jazz programs, youth ensembles, a Junior Chamber Orchestra and summer music camps. The Center gives students a chance to try their hand at arranging, composing and writing songs and operates a program that gives students the opportunity to work in a recording studio.
