Drafting Schools in Florida

The days when drafters used rulers and compasses exclusively are more or less gone, though old techniques are still taught because they provide a foundation. Today's drafters use computers, leading to the study of computer aided design and drafting (CADD) and the alternative name, CADD operators. Creating blueprints and circuit boards, drafters start the process of creating electronics, skyscrapers and even product packaging. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, drafters with a four-year degree, especially one with a CADD specialty, have the best chance of getting into the drafting field.
  1. Keiser University

    • Keiser University offers an associate of science in computer-aided drafting degree. Credits from this two-year course may not be transferable to a four-year degree, so if the student wishes to go that route, he should check with the four-year institution first. Students gain a full grounding in CADD systems and also study modeling techniques and theory. The objective of this degree is to fulfill an employer's entry level requirements in drafting.

    Florida Technical University

    • Florida Technical College offers the associate of science degree in computer drafting and design. The class teaches CADD, of course, but also emphasizes a general education that focuses on science and computer science. The degree's stated goal is to prepare students for entry level positions in drafting. Florida Technical College provides students opportunities to meet prospective employers and those already working in the field and it organizes field trips.

    Brown Mackie College

    • Brown Mackie College is a consortium of local colleges scattered around the United States. The schools focus on those already working, so you can pick up your month-long classes any time during the year. You may take the architectural design and drafting technology associate of science course through Brown Mackie College in Miami. The goal of this course is to provide the CADD fundamentals and creative thinking techniques to set you up in an entry level position. This course specializes in 3D modeling and CADD as it applies to architecture. Study areas include computers, drafting, engineering and business standards.

    Professional Certification

    • The American Design Drafting Association and American Digital Design Association provide certification in drafting techniques for professionals. You do not require formal education to seek certification. Testing is by examination, held at a variety of test centers. Since there are no test centers in Florida, candidates must either travel or arrange for a proctored examination.
