Although the automotive programs vary in their scope, the programs at Central Georgia Technical College teach students some of the same basic automotive skills. General education courses focus on the internal workings of a car, such as its braking system, electrical system, transmission and engine parts.
One of the certificate programs offered at Central Georgia Technical College is the Automotive Body Repair Assistant certificate. This is a 29 credit program that teaches the basic skills needed to assist a body repair technician.
One degree-granting academic program in auto mechanics is the Automotive Collision Repair major. The Automotive Collision Repair major is a 67 credit program that prepares students for an entry level position as an auto collision technician. Courses in this program include Automobile Components Identification and Conventional Body Structural Panel Repair.
The Automotive Fundamentals program prepares the student for the automotive service industry. The program requires 77 credits. Automotive Fundamentals includes intensive courses on the electrical, fuel and technical systems of an automobile. This program prepares candidates for an entry level automobile mechanic position.
The most intensive automotive program at Central Georgia Technical College is the Automotive Technology program. This program requires 103 credits. The courses are geared toward advanced automotive knowledge. Besides skills needed to repair a car, students also learn the science and technology of automobiles. Completion of this program helps a student prepare for a high end automobile technician job, an automobile engineering job or a technical career as a teacher or researcher on automobile sciences.
Central Georgia Technical College has four more certificate programs in automotive mechanics. The certificate programs are centered on specific aspects of a car. The programs include the Brakes Technician Technical Certificate, the Engine Performance Technician Technical Certificate, the Heating and Air Conditioning Technician Technical Certificate and the Suspension and Steering Technician Technical Certificate programs. Each certificate requires 15 to 18 credits.
