ABA Approved Summer Study Abroad Programs

According to American Bar Association (ABA) Standards, ABA-approved law schools cannot grant credit toward a Juris Doctor degree for study abroad programs unless said programs have been approved in advance. Study abroad credits only are available to students who have met with advisers at their ABA-approved home institutions and have completed their first year of law school.
  1. Types of Programs Available

    • Students are eligible to participate in approved semester, summer or individual study programs. Additionally, there are a limited number of ABA-approved cooperative programs available at foreign institutions. Summer programs are the most common and are available at most ABA-approved schools. A limited number of law schools also offer winter break intersession programs. Study abroad programs mostly are maintained by the home institutions and, therefore, vary based on college of enrollment.

    London Law Consortium

    • The London Law Consortium is a group of seven ABA-approved law schools (Kent College of Law, Indiana University-Bloomington, University of Kansas, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Kentucky College of Law, University of Utah and the University of Iowa), that work together to offer a spring semester abroad program in London. Though students from consortium schools are preferred, this program is open to students at all ABA-approved schools. Courses include the Law of the European Union and the English Legal System, as well as a rotation of other courses taught by visiting faculty.

    Individual Study Programs

    • Individual study programs are set up through the home institution and a set of academic advisers. Schools must report how many students are studying abroad and detail their experience to the ABA. Often, these students are studying through an exchange with an approved cooperative program.
