Northwestern University offers students in the theater department numerous opportunities to study abroad as part of the educational experience. Students may study in London, England; Dublin, Ireland; Legon, Ghana; Padova, Italy; Paris, France; Berlin and Freiburg, Germany; Kampala, Uganda; Brisbane and Sydney Australia; Dunedin and Wellington, New Zealand; Cairo, Egypt; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Study abroad courses vary by location and can be taken in either the fall or spring of the school year. Each location provides students with an opportunity to study something different. For example, students who study at the British American Drama Academy in London can take classes with leading British actors; the American University in Cairo offers studies in Arabic Drama. Students may have to complete prerequisite language courses prior to embarking on a study abroad program.

New York University's Department of Music and Performing Arts offers summer study abroad programs. NYU students may study Drama in Education in England, and learn how to incorporate drama into the classroom. Students can also take the Applied Theater course in Ireland, where they learn how to engage all types of audiences. The Theater of the Oppressed course in Brazil examines how drama can be used to raise social awareness. Students can apply credits earned from study abroad programs to a bachelor of arts degree in educational theater from NYU. This program trains future teachers to merge education and drama.

Michigan State University has a summer study abroad theater program, taking students to London. Michigan State designed the program to last for five full weeks, providing students with intensive theater study. As part of the five week experience, students go on field trips, workshops and lecture courses, attend performances and receive instructional training to enhance their theater acting skills. Courses offered as part of the summer study abroad program include Study Abroad in Theatre, Studies in Comparative Theatre and Drama, Theater and Society in the West, Period Resources for Directors and Designers, Special Topics: Acting and Voice and History of Theatre since 1850.
