The American Institute of Iranian Studies offers a two-month fellowship for language study in Tehran. This fellowship is only open to graduate students whose academic research requires the use of Farsi. Applicants must have at least one year of college-level Farsi to apply. The fellowship takes place during the summer and is offered in conjunction with Dehkhoda Institute in Tehran. Applications are due annually in January and two letters of reference, sent directly to the institute, are required.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, every summer the Critical Language Scholarship funds students for intensive study of languages deemed critical to national security. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any field of study. You do not need to be involved in academic research in Persian Studies to apply. Language programs last seven to 10 weeks. The Farsi program is hosted in Dushanbe, Tajikistan in conjunction with the Academy of Sciences in Tajikistan. Twenty hours of language instruction per week, shared accommodations, a stipend, orientation in Washington D.C. and airfare is provided. The deadline for application is in mid-December.

The Eurasian Regional Language Program offers summer, semester and academic year programs in Dushanbe, Tajikstan. Undergraduate and graduate students can apply, although no direct funding is available. You can apply for funding from outside organizations like the National Security Education Program and the Gilman Program. Language study is 15 hours a week, and participants live with a local host family. Applicants must have two years of college-level language study. Credit is offered from Bryn Mawr College. As of 2010, costs for the summer program were $4,900, airfare not included. A semester costs $12,100 and an academic year costs $20,500. Students can also sign up for classes in Farsi literature and culture.
