The Institute of International Education provides educational grant support for students who wish to study abroad through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships are awarded in amounts of up to $5,000, depending on a student's proposed program of international study and a student's financial need. To be eligible, a student must be a citizen of the United States, be an undergraduate, and be proposing to study abroad for at least four weeks. In addition to providing for students at traditional four-year colleges, Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships also support community college students who wish to study abroad. Applicants are encouraged to study in non-traditional locations outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Interested students should visit the IIE website for more information.

The Global Studies Foundation makes educational grant money available for international study through the Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad. GSF student grants are awarded in the amount of $1,000. To be eligible, a student must be attending school on a full-time basis and must be a citizen of the United States. GSF student grants are awarded on the basis of a student's prior academic achievement, as well as their outreach potential, or ability to share their experience abroad with others upon their return. The organization Youth For Understanding provides a variety of scholarships for American students who wish to travel abroad. The Kikkoman National Scholarship is available to a high school student who wishes to study in Japan during the summer. The Founder's Scholarship is available in the amount of $3,000 to an American undergraduate college student who wishes to study in one of 32 countries and who has a grade point average of at least 3.0. The YFU Americas Scholarship is available in amounts ranging from $800 to $1,475 to U.S. high school students who have a grade point average of at least 2.0 and who wish to study in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay or Venezuela.
