Graphic design students at the University of Minnesota may take part in study abroad programs to gain a better understanding of graphic design from an international perspective. The university provides more than $500,000 in scholarship funds for study abroad programs. Students are encouraged to plan their study abroad program under the supervision of an advisor. In addition, students are advised to ensure that the graphic design courses that they will be taking abroad fulfill the University of Minnesota's graphic design curriculum. The graphic design department accepts liberal arts courses from international institutions. Popular study abroad destinations include London, Glasgow, Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

Parsons School of Design in New York City provides summer study abroad as well as exchange programs for up to one-year with partner institutions at different international destinations. To qualify, prospective students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.8. Students who are on academic or disciplinary probation will not qualify for study abroad programs. In addition, students must submit a personal statement, letter of recommendation and a course of study along with their application. The school recommends that students apply for foreign study grants or international exchange programs. The program is open to students who are enrolled in graphic arts as well as other programs. Exchange partner institutions include Chelsea College of art and Design in London, Konstfack in Stockholm, Sydney College of the Arts in Australia and Domus Academy in Milan.
