Graphic Design Summer Programs for High School Students

Many of the nation's top-ranked art schools offer summer programs for high school students in graphic design and other studio disciplines. These programs give high school students the chance to experience residential and academic life at a rigorous art school, as well as the opportunity to build a portfolio of work for college admissions.
  1. Rhode Island School of Design

    • The Rhode Island School of Design, commonly referred to as RISD, offers several programs for high school students. Students can enter the certificate program in art school preparation, a program that spans three years and includes a variety of graphic design courses, from design fundamentals to three-dimensional design. Students work on preparing a portfolio for college admissions. The RISD pre-college program spans six weeks in the summer and offers rising juniors and seniors the opportunity to live on RISD's campus while choosing classes from among 21 different fields, including graphic design, comic book art, design for digital media, fashion design, game design, industrial design and illustration. In 2008, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked RISD first among fine arts schools and first in the graphic design field.

    Maryland Institute College of Art

    • The Maryland Institute College of Art, commonly referred to as MICA, offers a four-week summer pre-college program for high school students. Students live in dorms on MICA's campus and take courses for college credit. Students can take classes in a variety of studio disciplines, including graphic design, three-dimensional animation and illustration. The program also incorporates field trips to galleries and museums in nearby Washington, D.C., as well as New York City. In 2008, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked MICA fourth among fine arts schools and sixth in the graphic design field.

    School of the Art Institute of Chicago

    • The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Early College Program offers two summer institute sessions, including a three-week, three-credit program and a two-week, two-credit program. The three-week program focuses on a general curriculum, while the two-week program gives students the chance to focus on a specific studio discipline, such as graphic design. Students attend the same class five days a week for two weeks. In 2008, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked SAIC third among fine arts schools.
