Photography Schools in Berlin

With over 170 museums, Berlin is one of Europe's foremost centers for arts and culture. Resources and funding for the arts increased rapidly in the early 21st century, and photography was no exception. 2004 saw the opening of the Museum of Photography, and in 2003, Helmut Newton, arguably Berlin's most famous photographer, founded the foundation and museum that bears his name.
  1. Ostkreuzschule

    • The Ostkreuz School of Photography offers a 3 1/2-year course that covers all elements of photography and design. Students learn the technical aspects of photography as well as its history and theory, and they are encouraged to develop their own photographic style and storytelling techniques. The school holds a series of seminars with well-known professional photographers.

    Neue Schule für Fotografie

    • Students at the Neue Schule für Fotografie study for six semesters over the course of three years. The course begins with the fundamentals of photography and progresses to advanced studies. The Neue Schule caters to all sorts of aspiring photographers; it offers reportage, arts photography and fashion photography. As well as theoretical and practical aspects, the course also covers copyright, contract law and funding.

    Design Akademie Berlin

    • The Design Akademie runs a four-year, eight-semester B.A. course in communication design. The first three semesters cover the basics, and the latter half provides advanced studies in photography, design and multimedia communications. The school focuses on the practical applications of photography and design in commercial and cultural spheres. Prospective students receive the opportunity to attend a three-day "taster" course.
