How to Calculate Your GPA Goal

Your grade point average (GPA) influences your eligibility for college, if you are in high school. It affects your ability to get into graduate-level programs, if you are already in college. If you know you need a certain GPA to qualify for your next level of education, you can set goals for each semester, as long as you know your current GPA.

Calculate your GPA by multiplying the number of credit hours you have taken by the number of points available for the grade you received. For example, an A is worth four points per credit. If you got an A in a class that is worth three credits, you get 12 quality, or grade, points for that class.

    • 2

Divide your total quality, or grade, points by the total number of credit hours you have taken. This provides you with your GPA.

    • 3

Compare your GPA to the GPA required to attain your goals. If your current GPA is too low, then you need to calculate what it will take to reach your goal.

Look at your future classes and set a reasonable grade goal for each class. Add the quality points from these projected grades to your current GPA and divide by the number of credit hours you will have. If this still does not bring you to your goals, then revise the grades you will aim for in future classes.
