Alberta Automotive Apprentice Grants

Educational grants are monetary awards that help post-secondary students and apprentices alike with rising tuition costs and other related expenses. More importantly, you do not have to pay back grants. Apprentices enrolled in the Automotive Service Technician program in Alberta, Canada are eligible for two such grants funded by the federal government.
  1. Federal Incentive Grant

    • According to the Service Canada website, apprentices enrolled in a Red Seal trade program can get a monetary grant. Apprentices in the Automotive Service Technician program are recognized Red Seal trade students, so they can apply for a $1,000 grant per year/per person, with a limit set at $2,000. To receive this grant, apprentices must finish the first or second level in the program. This grant is called an Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) and is subject to taxes.

    Federal Completion Grant

    • The federal government offers a second grant, the Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG), for apprentices who complete the Automotive Service Technician program and become certified journeymen in that industry. In addition to the AIG, this is a $2,000 cash endowment available for apprentices who receive Red Seal approval or a provincial qualification certificate after concluding the program. A maximum allowable amount of $4,000 is available for apprentices who receive and complete their training from start to finish. The ACG grant is also subject to taxes. According to the Service Canada website, "there are 50 trades included in the Red Seal Program on a national basis which account for over 88% of all apprentices and more than 80% of the total trade workforce in Canada."

    Provincial Grants

    • According to the Apprenticeship and Industry Training System located in Edmonton, Alberta, the Alberta government does not offer automotive apprenticeship grants.
