The Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant supports Maryland students in Education. Awards are based both on need and merit, and grant recipients must agree to teach for one year for every year they are funded. Grants can be renewed for as many as five years if eligibility is maintained. Grant amounts range from $2,000 annually for full-time community college and part-time four-year college students to $4,000 for those attending a four year college full time. Availability of funds varies, depending upon the number of renewed multi-year awards. WSSAG applications are made through the Maryland Higher Education Committee.

The Health Personnel Shortage Incentive Grant offers tuition benefits at Howard County College for students enrolling in programs leading to a nursing, EMT or radiology degree. This benefit allows out of state students to enroll for an in-county tuition rate for clinical coursework if they agree to fulfil two years' of service in the state. Students must apply through the Maryland Higher Education Commission, and fill out a promissory note as well. The benefit is also available to in-state residents in these programs, who are granted in-county tuition rates regardless of which county they reside in. Loyola University offers the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education grant program, which provides up to $4,000 per year for undergraduate and graduate students who commit to teaching full time in a high-demand subject area for at least four years. Students can obtain up to $16,000 in funding for undergraduate studies, and $8,000 for graduate work. The grant will be permanently converted to a loan if the teaching obligation is not met. Applications are available from the university.

The Sharon Christa McAuliffe Grant Program offers renewable awards for Maryland upperclassmen enrolled in teacher education in the state. Recipients of these awards must agree to teach in Maryland for one year for each year of the award, and must teach in a subject area designated as critical, such as math. Award amounts range from $200 to around $15,000, and application materials are available from the Maryland Higher Education Committee.
